BRINGING MANTRAS INTO YOUR DAILY RITUAL
“Mantras are not small things, mantras have power. They are the mind vibration in relationship to the Cosmos. The science of mantra is based on the knowledge that sound is a form of energy having structure, power, and a definite predictable effect on the chakras and the human psyche.” ~ Yogi Bhajan
I have been collecting and using Mantras for many years. A Mantra is a sequence of words or syllables that are chanted and used repetitively, as part of practice. These simple words and phrases have the power to interrupt negative thought patterns, bringing with them a sense of peace. I love to listen to Mantras as well as chant. Mantras can offer spaces for spiritual practice and connection, like mini meditations. However they can also be found in popular music like “I am Walking on Sunshine”, you just can’t sing that song without feeling fabulous afterwards.
I love using Mantra Songs and combining with dance to create new habits, new rituals that gets your body moving and interrupts negative thought patterns as you sing your heart out. I also created a ritual called “Power Shower” at the Inspire Women Centre that really raises the energy in a fabulous way!
I use mantras every day as part of my Breath and Reconnecting and Bodylicious Rituals. I feel they help me to connect in a conscious way and benefit my wellbeing in so many ways including:
- Helping me to remove my negative self talk; changing my emotions- mental and physical
- Give me an energy burst when I get up
- Give me a space to reflect and show gratitude for my day in a non judgemental way- less is more!
- Help me feel good about my body- more confident
- Finding a happy place
I find the The Devi Mahatmyam or Devi Mahatmya, one of the most beautiful Mantras I have ever listened to. I was first introduced to this when I did Unleash the Power within, with Tony Robbins in 2012. What a life changing moment that was for me; and everything that followed wow!
The Devi Mahatmyam or Devi Mahatmya (Sanskrit: devīmāhātmyam, देवीमाहात्म्यम्), or “Glory of the Goddess”) is a Hindu religious text describing the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. As part of the Markandeya Purana, it is one of the Puranas or secondary Hindu scriptures. It was composed in Sanskrit around 400–500 CE, with authorship attributed to the sage (Rishi) Markandeya. Here, for the first time, “the various mythic, cultic and theological elements relating to diverse female divinities were brought together in what has been called the ‘crystallization of the Goddess tradition.” The unique feature of Devi Māhātmyam is the oral tradition. Though it is part of the devotional tradition, it is in the rites of the Hindus that it plays an important role. The entire text is considered as one single Mantra and a collection of 700 Mantras.
HYMN TO THE DIVINE MOTHER – English text by (Julie Redstone)
She is the Divine Essence that lives within all beings.
Her domain is the field of life, for she gives
to all beings the sustenance that is needed for life.
Her beauty lives in the natural world,
and spans the universes in all their splendor.
She has been called by many names,
for all traditions recognize Her.
Into each consciousness the knowledge is given
of the sacredness of life.
This sacredness IS the Mother.
She is the holy generator of the physical world,
joined to the heart and soul of every living thing.
All of the Earth is one with Her. All beings of the Earth owe their life to Her, for she is the Mother of all, the One who bestows all gifts of life.
Her gifts come to the deserving and to the
non-deserving alike, for the sun does not choose
upon whom to shine.
of the Oneness that bestows the graces that fill life.
We have not seen Her because her being is
cloaked in silence.
She emerges now as part of the Oneness where
she has always resided, blessing all, giving to all.
All who bow before Her are sustained by the life within them.
All who honor Her are sustained by life’s gifts
both within themselves and beyond.
The purpose of existence is to join with Life that lives
in all dimensions and all realms of being.
It is the Mother that creates this evolving,
this unfolding journey,
for she is the fabric of Time itself,
the means by which all things grow.
She is the template for life that exists within Her —
the substance and form of all that shall ever come to be.
May all be blessed by the blessings of the
Divine Oneness.
